What is Choice Theory?

Choice Theory, as the name suggests, posits that in every aspect of our lives we have a choice. Glasser, the psychiatrist who developed this theory, based his theory on the idea that all of our behaviours are choices and everything we do is a behaviour. The idea that we all only have the power to control ourselves and have limited power in controlling others is also central to this theory.

How does Choice Theory work ?

Your therapist will work with you to create a supportive space where you feel empowered to begin to recognise choices you may not have realised you have. This may relate to your thoughts, emotions and physiological responses as well as your engagement with society and the wider world. You will learn to manage your own feelings and actions in a way that you may not have felt able to previously.

What issues does Choice Theory work well with?

Choice Theory in psychotherapy works well with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, personal development, phobias, amongst others.
