What is Substance Abuse?

We often think of specific types of substances when we hear the phrase substance abuse. However it really refers to utilising any mood altering substance in a harmful way. Substances can include drugs, alcohol and any other substance which can affect mood. There are many reasons why people abuse substances, they include psychological, social and physiological factors. Substance abuse can be characterised by many different factors and not everybody considers the same factors to be indicative of substance abuse.

Can counselling help Substance Abuse?

Yes. Working with a therapist you can learn to develop strategies and make healthier choices for yourself. When you are at a point in your therapy where you have learned to use other methods of coping with stress and triggers in your life you may begin to work with your psychotherapist at a deeper level to understand how and why you may have come to this point in your life.
